Promoting the Application of Generative AI for Improved News Accessibility
The PAGINA project aims to bridge the gap between journalism and citizens. In this research, we will develop AI tools to improve Dutch news accessibility and readability for those who struggle with traditional news formats, specifically for low-literate demographics. Additionally, these tools will help journalists to better understand readers’ experiences.

Current Work
- Setting up a reading experiment with target readers to test human vs. machine-generated simplifications
- Creating a dataset of original and corresponding simplified (Dutch) news articles
- Exploring ways to disentangle reader interest from text complexity in reading times
Research Areas
Text Accessibility
Our main focus is text accessibility, where we use AI/NLP-driven methods to automatically improve the accessibility of Dutch news, specifically for low-literate audiences.
Readability
We aim to achieve higher accessibility via improving the readability of a text. For example by the two approaches below. Higher readability entails that a text is easier or quicker to read, due to lower processing loads.
Text Simplification
Exploring the use of automatic text simplification to reduce the complexity of a text, so it becomes more comprehensible to the wider public.
Perspective Detection and Alteration
Exploring the detection of the perspective or frame of a text to change it in such a way that the general public or a specific target group feels seen, heard, and more included.
About Us
The PAGINA project is driven by the Computational Linguistics research group at the University of Groningen, in which we collaborate with a regional newspaper, a design company, and an AI application institution.
